Bale and Lennon and No Wingers

On Saturday Spurs drew 0 0 with Sunderland at The Stadium of Light. Sunderland defended well and there was very little worth talking about in the match. In the first half Spurs could have had a penalty when Bardsley handled the ball in the area, but it would be wrong to suggest that it was stone wall, even though it was Chris Foy who was the referee.

The real point of criticism was that Redknapp chose not to start Lennon and once again played with no wingers, instead using Bale as an attacking midfielder, where he had a largely ineffective match. We looked very flat and lacked any sort of attacking ideas. When Lennon came on we looked far more lively and he nearly made an instant impact by setting up VDV.

So the question is then, why does Redknapp refuse to play wingers? There has been so much praise of the style of football that Barcelona play recently, and so much talk of "in England Messi would have been pushed out wide." While this may be true, it should not devalue the positions of right wing and left wing. They offer something to the game that is above and beyond constantly trying to go through the middle. Just look at at Real Madrid, Ronaldo, Di Maria, Mercelo amongst others are all top class wingers. Lennon and Bale also fit the description of top class wingers, yet Rednapp refuses to play them in their position, or even play them at all. I can't help but feel that with Lennon and Bale on the wings today we would have come away with 3 points and have had a nice cushion over the 4th, 5th and 6th positions.

It may not be a popular thing to say but i will always tell it the way i see it, Redknapp was to blame for the loss of 2 points on Saturday, and that is what it was, a loss of 2 points not the gaining of 1. Not for the first time this season he was far from tactically sound and it really cost us. Let's hope it doesn't cost us at the end of the season and hopefully we can get a good win in less than 48 hours time when we take on Norwich at home.
