Manager Watch - David Moyes

After Saturdays victory over Spurs, Bill Kenwright, the Everton chairman admitted that he understands why David Moyes has been linked with the vacant Chelsea job and with the Spurs job in the summer. He did add that he doesn't think that Moyes will leave Everton, but it does beg the inevitable question, would Moyes be a good signing for Spurs?

The appointment of Redknapp was not in keeping with previous appointments made by Mr Levy, who seemed to prefer bringing in big name foreign managers. However, Redknapp has been the most successful appointment in the Levy era, and the chairman may wish to continue with his policy of appointing British managers in the summer, should Redknapp answer the call from England.

There is no doubt that Moyes has done a steady job for Everton, at times even threatening to become successful. He has consistently produced teams that are capable of challenging in the top 7 of the Premier League, even conquering the big four, and finishing in fourth above Liverpool on one occasion, only to be knocked out of the Champions League straight away. The modest success of Moyes is made all the more impressive when you consider he has operated on a shoe string budget. In his ten year tenure, he has rarely spent more than a few million pounds a season, sometimes even starting the new season without a penny being spent. He has still managed to attract players of the calibre of Cahill, Arteta, Saha, Howard and Baines, amongst others, who are all decent players. While his ability to put together a good side without much money is admirable, is it going to be useful at a club like Spurs, where he can expect a hefty war chest to help us achieve our aims? Other managers in the past have not found such a transaction easy, often wasting money on players who are not of a high standard.

This summer will be a vital one for Spurs, it all depends on if we can hold onto the likes of Bale, Modric and Van Der Vaart, while adding quality players like Hazard and Vertongen to a roster that is already worthy of Champions League football. There is no secret in the fact that Redknapp shares a great friendship with his players and this may have been behind Modric staying with Spurs last summer. I, for one, do not believe that Moyes would have that same respect from the players, and would subsequently not be able to hold on to our best players. This could see us fall apart quicker than a once half decent Villa side.

While i have the up most respect for Moyes and there is no denying that he is a very good manager, i don't think he is the man to take Spurs to the next level, if we are to continue our progression, we need to show real ambition, and make the next appointment a world class manager. It is a moment that will define Levy's rein as chairman, but in Levy we trust, and he will make the right decision.
